Segal Institute for Clinical Research Board-Certified and Board-Eligible Adult Psychiatrists conduct Phase I-IV inpatient research studies for most adult CNS and addiction disorders. Segal Institute's success is largely due to the large volume of patients seen by the clinician network at its sister company, Compass Health Systems. Compass Health Systems is the largest provider of mental health services in each of the communities where its practices are located. Segal Institute's inpatient sites are located in all of the regions where Compass Health Systems has practices, including Atlantic Shores Hospital and Hollywood Pavilion Hospital in South Florida; Highlands Behavioral Health System in Denver; and Palmetto Lowcountry Behavioral Health in Charleston. All of the Segal Institute inpatient facilities can defer to a central Institutional Review Board.

In South Florida, Compass Health Systems Psychiatrists saw more than 5,000 adult inpatients in 2008. The Compass Health practitioners have privileges in approximately 20 area hospitals and see almost 300 inpatients each day. The most common disorders treated are depression, schizophrenia, psychotic disorders, mood disorders and addiction. Segal Institute Principal Investigators conduct inpatient studies at two psychiatric hospitals, Hollywood Pavilion Hospital and Atlantic Shores Hospital. Both of these sites are JCAHO-accredited and have dedicated research beds and research offices. Each site is equipped with specialized equipment for inpatient research studies, along with DSL lines, offices for cognitive testing, CLIA-waived lab processing areas, private offices for consenting subjects and monitor rooms.

In Colorado, Compass Colorado Health Systems Psychiatrists saw almost 1,500 adult inpatients in 2008. Compass Colorado has a medical directorship at Highlands Behavioral Health System, a free-standing psychiatric hospital with 86 total beds. The Compass Psychiatrists saw an average of 60 inpatients per day. Research beds and offices are available for sponsor specific protocols.

The psychiatrists at Compass Carolina saw approximately 400 inpatients in 2008. The primary inpatient facility served by the Compass Carolina Psychiatrists is Palmetto Lowcountry Behavioral Health. The JCAHO-accredited site has 110 total beds, a partial hospitalization program and residential treatment center. The Segal Institute team has conducted over 25 inpatient research studies at the site.
